Are out of body experiences real?

In studying the ancient Hindu, Buddhist, Zen, Taoist traditions, and others I come to learn they all had an understanding of an energy body. In Hindu philosophy prana the Sanskrit word for breath, “life force” permeates reality on all levels including inanimate objects. In Taoism it is called Chi, in Japanese traditions it is referred to as Ki.

I will use the Indian example of an energy body or prana body for simplification. Beginning at just inches below the base of the spine is the first chakra of the seven primary Chakras, moving up the spine a few inches below the navel is #2, then to about the level of the navel #3, the heart #4, the throat #5, the space between and just above the eyes #6, and finally to the crown chakra #7, located just a few inches above the head. The 5 chakras between the base and the crown chakra are all located in the spine.

These larger chakras feed a network of more than another 100 smaller chakras. Prana is dispensed to the body through a system of thousands of nadis you can think of as invisible wires or nerves that nourish and rejuvenate the body and all the cells, down to the smallest particles.

The Chinese concept is similar but uses different names and locations for its centers. It is interesting to note that while no physical evidence of an energy body exists the Chinese have been sticking needles in locations on the body they identify as meridian lines. This practice of course is well known in the west as acupuncture. In China it has been used for thousands of years to stop pain, as anesthesia for surgeries and a host of other things.

The point in all of this is that people who have out of body experiences learn techniques for rolling the energy body out of the physical body. They report being in a body that is separate from their physical body which they can observe when they are in close proximity to it.

I have had many out of body experiences but only a few where my energy body came along. I have learned to use consciousness as the medium for astral travel and other out of body adventures and find it more efficient than dragging the energy body around.

I have found it is much easier to simply use my intention to leave the body. My view is the physical body is just an avatar used by consciousness, which permeates the body and surrounds it as in an energy bubble. It really is an extra step to engage the energy body and remove it from the avatar for the purpose of exploration outside the body.

If your meridian lines and chakras were lit up, they would replicate the physical appearance of the body they occupy. I add to this discussion my understanding of the energy body as an ethereal frame which supports the physical body like air supports a balloon. It seems to exist midway between the physical and nonphysical conscious realities in my experiences with it.

Robert Monroe a wealthy New York businessman had many spontaneous out of body experiences which included his energy body. He devoted full time to establishing scientific investigation into this phenomena when he retired from business. He founded the Monroe Institute in Virginia for research and teaching in the 60’s and it was he who attached the name going out of body to this paranormal activity.

One of his research scientists Tom Campbell, a physicist and consciousness researcher makes the point that we are not going out of our body but going out of our mind when entering the larger field of Existence consciousness. However, he is quick to concede that using the term going out of one’s mind would not be a good idea.

William Buhlman who has written Adventures Beyond the Body: How to Experience Out-of-Body Travel, I think is one of the foremost experts on going out of body and he uses the energy Body/roll out technique, among others. William Buhlman has trained out-of-body travelers in his workshop for more than a decade, teaching people how to project their consciousness outside the limits of their physical bodies and to explore dimensions and worlds beyond everyday life.

Astral travel, Buhlman reveals, not only can expand your conscious ‘it can help verify the existence of the soul, teach you about past lives, and enhance your daily life. Buhlman has many books out on the subject, but I would recommend the one above to familiarize yourself with the subject.

Thousands of people who have near death experiences (NDE’s) report going out of body. There is much research and documentation about people who had been clinically dead for some time watching doctors and nurses work on them. A general theme is the patient floating above everyone, seeing their dead body on the operating table and being able to report the events that were taking place in great detail.

From my experience going out of body is a real and verifiable. My preferred technique is using consciousness to exit but others swear by the removal of the energy body technique. Both take you to the same place.

I would make the point loud and clear that you can expand your consciousness, verify the existence of your soul, learn about past lives, and enhance your daily life as Mr Buhlman points out, without going to all the trouble of learning to go out of body using any technique.

Self-realization is what Mr Buhlman is really talking about and there are more efficient paths to that end including using the PME system of self-inquiry.
