Vol-1 Ask Frank: What is meant by the term
Q. I’ve always found this idea of just letting go to be a useful reminder of what I’m aiming for with meditation and mindfulness. Go with the flow – just let go of the preconceptions and thoughts your mind is fixated on. Directly experience this moment for what it is. Can you expand on this idea for me.
Being in the moment or the Now is another way of expressing getting into the flow to reach either point consciousness or the being state. However, you are partially describing the spiritual technique of surrender which would go one step further by advising you to stay in the flow at all times and not resist what life brings your way. With that in mind my answer might be a little more than you were asking for.
“Accept life on life’s terms” is a phrase often associated with the concept of surrender as well as” Let go and let God” in the tradition of Alcoholics Anonymous who I think have used surrender very effectively in their 12-step plan. Another cornerstone of the AA surrender teachings is the “Serenity Prayer” God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
This idea is Spiritual Surrender and is about offering up the small self or personal identity to that of the absolute. When you surrender spiritually, you stop forcing solutions on situations you can’t control and instead trust and have faith that there is a Divine force taking care of everything in a perfectly orchestrated manner. When used in a spiritual context, surrender also means to give up but here it’s to give up everything that no longer serves you. This technique allows for those who are having difficulties in life to release those things that are causing problems and turn them over to the universe. This has the effect of going with the flow for those who are struggling with greater issues.
In the Vedic texts, spiritual surrender is referred to as the “joy of surrender.” When you surrender spiritually, you stop forcing solutions on situations you can’t control and instead trust and have faith that there is a Divine force taking care of everything.
Surrender can open your life to a much greater perspective allowing for healing and being in the moment as you transfer your underlying fear and let go, freeing you to live life in the moment which is the greatest gift of all.
You may feel like you are giving up control of your decisions but in reality what you are giving up is the worry, stress, and anxiety of anticipating the next thing that can go wrong. In this way you are gaining of control your life as the universe, delivers in real time, choices that you can face. With a rested peaceful mind, you will often have more higher quality, creativity solutions from which to make a choice. Better choices lead to a higher quality of life.
I applaud your realization of this concept and your ability to experience it. As you can see it’s really foundational to meditation and evolves us with living in the NOW. Many people have trouble being in the flow at different points in their life and I hope this expanded idea helps you and others understand this valuable tool a little better. Thank you for the question and your insight in asking it. You can find more on information on my blogs and podcasts on surrender.
